95 physiological deliveries, 16 caesarean sections and 3 hysterectomies

Asile, December 16, 2022 --- Josephine does not know how to thank the Asile hospitainer. She had benefited from a cesarean section on October 8, 2021. With her son, she greeted the initiators of this containerized health structure during its inauguration on December 16, 2022.

The two hospitals, the one at “Asile” and the one to be installed at “Les Anglais”, were granted to Haiti by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, thanks to the support of UNFPA, the United Nations agency in charge of reproductive health.

The general Director of the Ministry of Public Health and Population, Lauré Adrien, who represented Minister Alex Larsen, welcomed this testimony, inviting the community to take ownership of the hospitainer.

The earthquake of August 14, 2021 destroyed two of the Asile's health institutions, including the Community Reference Hospital, which served the arrondissement of Anse-à Veau in the Nippes department.

UNFPA Representative in Haiti, Saidou Kabore, was pleased that the Asile hospitainer was able to respond to the services that the Community Reference Hospital was offering. "Three months after its functioning, the hospital has been able to perform 95 physiological deliveries, 16 caesarean sections and 3 hysterectomies," he said. Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or a part of the uterus and sometimes the ovaries and fallopian tubes as well.

UNFPA hopes that this structure will continue to be useful in saving the lives of women and girls. These on-site interventions have had an economic and social benefit for the population. Frequent displacement has been avoided, as well as possible deaths.

UNFPA renews its commitment to women and girls so that no woman dies giving life and no child dies discovering life.

The Departmental Director of Nippes, Jacques Laroche, wished for the reconstruction of a permanent hospital at Asile respecting the paraseismic and paracyclonic standards. The Community Reference Hospital, which collapsed on August 14, 2021, had been inaugurated in 2008.
