Democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights are the foundations of resilient, inclusive and peaceful societies.

They guarantee freedom, advance sustainable development and protect the dignity and rights of every person.

On the International Day of Democracy, we celebrate its promise and recognize the many threats it faces in this time of tension and upheaval.

Walls are tightening around civic spaces.

Misinformation and disinformation poison public debate, create divisions in our societies and erode trust in institutions.

This year's theme, Empowering the Next Generation, emphasizes the essential role played by children and young people in safeguarding democracy today and tomorrow.

It is not enough to listen to children and young people.

We must act for them by investing massively in education, skills development and lifelong learning.

We must protect human rights and promote gender equality.

Finally, we need to expand the effective participation of young people in decision-making processes at all levels.

On this important day, let us join forces, all generations, and work together to build a fairer world for all.
