Port-au-Prince, August 12, 2023 --- Haiti needs to consider three axes to move towards a sustainable world, according to young people hosting a webinar organized by UNESCO in collaboration with CARIDIMA and Loop on International Youth Day, August 12, 2023.

These focus on:

  • Channeling the country's green skills.
  • Innovation and creativity. There are new ways to create businesses. Carpooling to encourage mobility is one example.
  • Social influence of youth and community groups in the form of advocacy for green skills and sustainable development.

Blue and green economy

Initiate blue and green economy activities. When we talk about green skills, we have to think of two categories from an economic point of view: the blue economy, which refers to the marine environment, and the green economy, which incorporates part of the blue economy.
Young people need to be part of a dynamic of innovation and creativity to promote sustainable development.

Green skills

Green skills refer to the set of abilities to understand, solve and mitigate needs. These skills will bring economic benefits and help solve certain economic problems. These skills need to be developed to shape a sustainable world.
According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, green jobs are set to increase. An additional 24 million jobs are expected to be created by 2030.
Green skills are rooted in the current major ecological crisis, characterized by issues such as plastic waste and the loss of 37% of biodiversity.

Haiti and extreme phenomena

40% of arable land goes into the sea. The countries most affected by these phenomena are the least likely to talk about them. Haiti is one of the countries most affected by extreme phenomena.

Avoiding waste

The panelists gave advice on how to avoid waste, mentioning programmed obsolescence and the circular economy.
