Port-au-Prince, 25 October 2017 --- The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General, Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Acting Head of the United Nations Mission for the Support of Justice (MINUJUSTH), welcomes the improved stability of Haiti. According to Dr. Mamadou Diallo, this represents a window of opportunity for sustainable development.

The Resident Coordinator was speaking to the press on the occasion of United Nations Day, 24 October, marking the anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945, of which Haiti participated in the writing.

Dr. Diallo, a Guinean national who succeeds Egyptian Mourad Wahba, who stepped down last January as part of the end of MINUSTAH's mandate, presented the new mission, MINUJUSTH, as a new stage in the partnership of the United Nations with Haiti.

This partnership marks « the continued commitment of the United Nations to support the country in its goal of consolidating stability and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to become an emerging country by 2030, » the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations said.

« The UN is and will remain with Haiti to support the country in achieving this noble ambition, » Dr. Diallo added.

The Resident Coordinator addressed a number of other issues at the press conference, including the cholera epidemic. Mamadou Diallo reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to support families and communities affected by the disease, and assured that « the United Nations will continue to implement the new approach in support of the Government's efforts of Haiti to eliminate the transmission of the disease and its root causes ».
