When midwifery students from Haiti come together in an association

Port-au-Prince, January 20, 2020 --- An ad hoc committee to lead the process of setting up the Haitian Association of Midwifery Students was officially presented to the press on January 18, 2020. It is chaired by Jeffthanie Mathurin.

This committee is made up of representatives from the various promotions since the creation of the National Institute for the Training of Midwives (INSFSF) and representatives of students currently in training.

Meeting with the students for the finalization of a charter for the association, organizing the election of an executive committee and establishing a roadmap are among the next steps that the ad hoc committee hopes to take, informs its President.   

Jeffthanie Mathurin indicates that one of the main objectives of the Association of Midwifery Students will be to foster the development of midwifery students. 

The number of midwives trained in Haiti is 448 of which 246, or 55%, were trained with direct support from UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. INSFSF, the country's only public institution in the field, trains midwives to improve maternal health care for Haitian women and help reduce maternal mortality.

According to the president of the ad hoc committee, the Haitian Association of Midwifery Students is projected as an advocacy force to improve the framework for the training of students, encourage their involvement in the life of the INSFSF and support the evolution of said institution through its imminent integration into the State University of Haiti.

The Association also intends, adds Jeffthanie Mathurin, to promote communication and relationships between students and the INSFSF management bodies. Finally, it sees an important role in interaction with sister health training institutions and a social role (activities with social and educational scope).
